Ransomware Attacks Continue in Ukraine with Mysterious WannaCry Clone

A fourth ransomware campaign focused on Ukraine has surfaced today, following some of the patterns seen in past ransomware campaigns that have been aimed at the country, such as XData, PScrypt, and the infamous NotPetya. The ransomware was discovered today by a security researcher who goes online only by the name of MalwareHunter. The researcher says the ransomware got his attention because mostly Ukrainian victims were submitting samples for analysis on VirusTotal.    In the past month and a half, Ukraine has been bombarded with ransomware campaigns. The first was

Credit Sergei Supinsky/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images    KIEV, Ukraine — The day started like most for Roman N. Klimenko, an accountant in Kiev who had just settled in at his desk, typing at a computer keyboard and drinking coffee. He was unaware that concealed within his tax preparation software lurked a ticking bomb. That bomb soon exploded, destroying his financial data and quickly spreading through computer systems vital to Ukraine’s government — and beyond. The cyberattack, on Tuesday, was caused by a virus similar to

What the helicopter attack tells us about the Venezuela crisis

(CNN) Downtown Caracas was the scene of an alleged audacious attempt to destabilize the faltering government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro this week. A stolen police helicopter piloted by Oscar Perez -- an officer in Venezuela's investigative police force -- strafed the Supreme Court building and the Interior Ministry, dropping grenades and firing shots before whirring away after more than an hour.  It was the latest, and perhaps most bizarre chapter in Venezuela's months-long downward spiral. Near daily clashes between government forces and protesters have paralyzed the South American country. Close to 80 people have died since the beginning of this latest round of civil unrest. For months Maduro has been saying that protesters are plotting a coup against his government. With his grip on power starting to slip, some have asked if the Hollywood-esque coup attempt was an elaborate ruse by

Gathered here are images of Muslim Americans observing Eid al-Fitr and Ramadan this year in New York, Connecticut, California, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.   1.
